Tutorial #1 : colouring an outline

outline from this page

finished rose A

finished rose B

Step 1 : copy the rose outline and open in Paint Shop Pro; in the Image palette, increase the colour depth to 16 million colours and zoom in on the image so you can see the individual pixels clearly - I tend to need at least 500%!

Step 2 : decide whether you want your finished rose to look like Rose A or Rose B : if A, skip Step 3 and go straight to Step 4; if B, follow Stage 3 first.

Step 3 : colour the outline of the roses in pink, colour #E87996, using the brush tool size 1 hardness 100 to fill in each individual pixel. Leave the outlines of the stems and leaves as they are.

Step 4 : flood fill the outer rose petals in pale pink #FCB8BB, the inner petals in medium pink #E88AA5 and the underside of the petals in dark pink # C85468 (see enlarged detail in diagram 1); flood fill all the stems, leaves etc. in green #8EB761 .

Step 4 : highlight the petals marked with a blue X in diagram 2 with the Magic Wand tool at tolerance 0, feather 0, antialias unchecked - hold down the shift key while you highlight each one so you can do them all at once. Leave them highlighted (indicated by a moving dotted line round the edges of each petal highlighted.)

Step 5 : open a new layer above the main image layer - naming it 'cutout' will help save confusion. With the Cutout layer selected on the Layers palette, select Effects - 3D effects - cutout on the main toolbar, and the following settings : shadow colour #C85468, offsets 0, opacity 100, blur 10, fill interior unchecked. Deselect by clicking anywhere on the image.

Step 6 : repeat Step 4, this time highlighting the petals indicated in diagram 3. With the Cutout layer sill selected on the Layers palette, select Effects - 3D effects - cutout on the main toolbar, and the following settings : shadow colour #C85468, offsets 0, opacity 100, blur 20, fill interior unchecked. Deselect once more.(When doing cut out shading you must always make sure that the special "cutout" layer is selected.)

Step 7 : repeat the cutout process again for the remaining innermost petals : shadow colour #A63A4C, offsets 0, opacity 100, blur 5, fill interior unchecked. Deselect.

Step 8 : the cutouts for the remaining petals - the underside of the second rose - and the flower bud follow the same process with settings shadow colour #8B1B2E, offset -1 vertical -1 horizontal, opacity 100, blur 5, fill interior unchecked.

Step 9 : highlight the stems and cut out with settings shadow colour #004000, offsets 0 , opacity 100, blur 2, fill interior unchecked then repeat the process with the leaves and sepals using the same settings apart from blur which is 5.
